Unit Description: All staff working on inpatient psych be it RN or MHT require BLS and crisis de-escalation training of some kind, such as CPI, PMCS or TRUST. PALS is NOT a requirement. It goes without saying they should have experience with the inpatient psychiatry. In addition, they require not only finger printing, but background checks, and clearance through the Statewide Register for Child Abuse and Maltreatment as well as NYS Justice Center's SEL (Staff Exclusion List). RN's scrub color is steel gray. MHT scrub color is sage green.

Job Description:
The Mental Health Technician (MHT) is an individual who functions in both a support and collaborative role with the Registered Nurse by providing direct care to individual and to groups of psychiatric patients. He/she is responsible for patient care activities as assigned and milieu management. Principal duties and responsibilities include: organize and implement group activities in conjunction with the unit program and other staff, performs procedures associated with activities of daily living and personal hygiene of the patient, demonstrates a humanistic and caring attitude, demonstrate a basic knowledge of desired effects and side effects of psychotropic medications, establish and foster collegial relationships with peers and other disciplines, is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and promotes an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity, demonstrate therapeutic skills in crisis intervention, perform supplemental components of the nursing admission, and, recognizes changes in a patient's mental status & sharing findings with the primary nurse.
