Unit Notes
Department: Psychiatric (Adult) | RN
*Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS. Prefer: CPI- can do training on site. BSN preferred.*
- # Beds: 26
- Nurse: Patient Ratios: Days: 4 RNs (Ratios 1: 6-7), Nights 3 RNs (Ratios 1: 8). Techs: Days 5 PCTs, Evenings 5 PCTs, Nights 3 PCTs.
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS. Prefer: CPI- can do training on site. BSN preferred.
- Common diagnoses: 18+ adults, schizophrenic, bipolar, schizoaffective, substance abuse, depression, bipolar, borderline personality,
intellectually challenged population- some placement issues, admits from ER- medically stable. No detox or rehab patients, those go
to specialized unit.
- Experience: Must have 1 year in Psych experience. Must have: 6 months of prior medical experience (MS, MS-Tele, PCU, ICU, ER, etc)
Prefer: CPI- can do training on site. Ok with first time travelers.
- Do you ever have IV's on this unit?: No, may be asked to do IM injections and phlebotomy.
- Charge Nurse 24/7 & do they take patients: Charge Nurse/Assistant Nurse Care Coordinators (ANCC) (2 on Days, 1 on Nights)- run
the unit 24 hours, travelers could be placed in charge role. Support from all hours- charge at max 5-6 patients.
- Do you use physical restraints on this unit?: Avoid use by utilizing CPI de-escalation techniques;if needed, 4 points, leather restraints
Prefer: RNs to have prior experience, but will review during orientation.
- Are there nurse aids or mental health specialists on this unit? Ratios? Duties?: PCTs: Job Duties: safety checks, room checks, vitals,
weights on Saturday, ADLs, directly observing patient care, rounding every 15 minutes, phlebotomy (must have prior experience- will
do some re-education on unit), blood glucose checks, 1: 1s, and assisting nursing staff as needed.
- Is RT available if needed? If patients have oxygen or need treatments does RT do these?: No RT available;RNs to manager cpap and
bipap, rarely used (willing to train on this- please call out if they have experience or not). If low pulse ox, RNs to make a consult and pt
likely transferred to a higher level of care when they need continuous oxygen.
- Is there tele on this unit? Monitor Techs? RNs read strips?: No
- Shifts & Scheduling: RN Shifts: Days 7a-730p, Nights 7p-730a. PCT Shifts: Days 0700-1530, Evenings 1500-2330, Nights 2300-0730.
Scheduling: Travelers to give availability and management will do their best to accommodate requests, but ask travelers to stay
flexible and help fill gaps in permanent staffing;Do not guarantee block scheduling. Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and could
lead to termination.
- Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend.
- Holiday Requirements: May be asked to go in the Holiday Rotation;At least 2-3 in a year.
- Is there call or a standby requirement?: None, in emergency traveler may be asked to pick up a shift.
- Floating Requirements: Travelers are first to float. Float to any adolescents or adult psych unit;Not typically floated to psych
emergency- crisis area or 5 beds/acute phase, detox, rehab.
- Scrub Color: RNs: Royal Blue, LPNs: Kelly Green, PCTs: Eggplant/Burgundy.
- Unit Specific Orientation: 2-4 days with a preceptor and will be oriented to multiple units for floating purposes.
